Artist Log - Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry

McCurry portrays the poverty shown in third world countries, he has focused a lot on children and the way they live, as you can see below a lot of the children are dirty, they haven't washed in a while. He also tries to show that not only children are effected, there are also hundreds of adults who are effected by poverty and he does his best to show ho poverty hurts and effects different countries and cultures.

Here we can see that this boy is cold and dirty and doesn't own a lot of clothing, McCurry has clearly shown us that this boy is living in poverty, just looking at the image you feel cold but empathy for the boy.

This boy looks dirty and upset,he walls are also this chalk red, an the house from what we can see looks empty. The boy looks upset and McCurry is once again trying to show us what it's like in other cultures, whether the chalk is part of some kind of festival or ritual in their culture or i the boy is generally just dirty.

This man looks as if he work in some kind or mines, McCurry shows us that hard manual labour is a problem in some countries, he probably works all day but still can barely afford to look after his family. Agin the man is very dirty and looks as if he is in pain.

This child is once again dirty and is lacking clothes in which appears to a cold area. The difference between his photo and McCurry's other photos is that this time the boy is holding a weapon. This shows you the truth about a lot of third world countries where children have access to weapons and are taught how to use them at such an early age.

McCurry has influenced me in the way that he is able to who so much in a single portrait, I want to be able to show as much as he can in a single portrait, I want to be able to show emotion just like McCurry.

To summarise McCurry's work, I would like to say how much I enjoy his photos, every photo that I've seen by him makes you feel emotion and gives you questions you want answered but most of all it makes you want to help.
